Unit 4 · Lesson 21
Nūn sākina and tanwīn
Four ways to say the n
When a nūn has a sukūn (نْ), or a word ends in tanwīn, what you do with the n depends on the letter after it. There are four rules.
Iẓhār: say it clearly
ء ه ع ح غ خBefore the six throat letters, say the n clearly, without a nasal hold.
Idghām: merge it
ي ر م ل و نBefore the letters of يَرْمَلُونَ, the n merges into the next letter. With ي ن م و, keep a nasal sound (ghunna) for two counts; with ل and ر, merge without one. Inside a single word, such as دُنْيَا, the n stays clear.
Iqlāb: turn it into m
بBefore bāʾ, the n turns into a mīm, held with a ghunna behind lightly closed lips. The muṣḥaf shows a small mīm (ۢ) as a reminder.
Ikhfāʾ: hide it
ت ث ج د ذ ز س ش ص ض ط ظ ف ق كBefore the other 15 letters, the n is hidden: the tongue doesn’t press, and the sound passes through the nose for two counts while the mouth gets ready for the next letter.
