Unit 4 · Lesson 22

Mīm sākina

Three rules for the m

A mīm with sukūn (مْ) also has rules, depending on the letter after it. There are three.

Ikhfāʾ shafawī: hide it at the lips

ب

Before bāʾ, the lips close lightly and the mīm is held with a ghunna for two counts.

Idghām shafawī: merge it

م

Before another mīm, the two merge into one doubled mīm with a ghunna.

Iẓhār shafawī: say it clearly

Every other letter

Before every other letter, say the mīm clearly, without a ghunna. Take special care before و and ف, which are also made with the lips.
