Common questions

Name, family, the past and more

Do I have to change my name?

No. You only need to change it if its meaning is bad or it implies worship of something other than Allah. Many companions of the Prophet ﷺ kept their names.

What about my sins before Islam?

They are forgiven. Accepting Islam is a completely fresh start.

“Islam wipes out whatever came before it.”

Sahih Muslim 121

How do I treat my non-Muslim family?

With kindness and respect. The Quran commands good treatment of parents even when they are not Muslim, as long as they do not ask you to disobey Allah. Good character is often the best way to show family what Islam is.

“…but accompany them in this world with kindness.”

Quran 31:15

Do I need to learn Arabic?

Not before anything else. You will need a few phrases for the prayer, starting with Al-Fatiha, and you can learn them gradually. Dua, your personal prayer to Allah, can be in any language.

What if I make mistakes?

Everyone does, including people raised as Muslims. Ask Allah for forgiveness (say “Astaghfirullah”), do your best and keep going.

“Do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins.”

Quran 39:53

Should I take a ghusl (full-body wash)?

It is recommended after accepting Islam, and some scholars consider it required. See “Wudu & ghusl” for how.
