The six pillars of faith

What a Muslim believes

When the angel Jibril (Gabriel) asked the Prophet ﷺ about faith (iman), he answered with six beliefs:

  1. 1

    Allah

He is One, with no partner, child or equal. He alone creates, sustains and deserves worship.

  2. 2

    His angels

Created from light, they worship Allah and carry out His commands, such as Jibril, who brought revelation.

  3. 3

    His books

Allah revealed scriptures to earlier prophets, including the Torah, the Psalms and the Gospel. The Quran is the final revelation, preserved unchanged.

  4. 4

    His messengers

Including Adam, Noah, Abraham, Moses and Jesus, peace be upon them. Muhammad ﷺ is the last of them.

  5. 5

    The Last Day

Everyone will be resurrected and held to account for what they did.

  6. 6

    Divine decree (qadar)

Allah knows and has decreed all things, the good and what seems bad to us, and we still choose and are responsible for our actions.
