Unit 3 · Lesson 15
Your first verse
Read the basmala, syllable by syllable
Put everything together and read your first line of the Quran, the basmala. Read slowly, one syllable at a time.
Joining words
When a word starts with ٱ, its alif is skipped, and you carry straight on from the last vowel of the word before. Tap Listen to hear a reciter.
The name Allah
The lām in the name Allah is heavy (full and deep) after a fatḥa or ḍamma, as in qul huwa-llāhu, and light after a kasra, as in bismi-llāhi.
PRACTICE
Tap an answer to check yourself.
When you join بِسْمِ to ٱللَّهِ, what happens to the alif of ٱللَّهِ?
Is the lām in Allah heavy or light here?
قُلْ هُوَ ٱللَّهُ
Why is there a shadda on the rāʾ of ٱلرَّحْمَٰنِ?
